Aristotle put his books on 7 shelves organized by topic, the seventh, the one beyond Physics, was meta-phyisics, the one down there past physics. What used to mean beyond or past, in a spatial sense has now come to mean beyond in the sense of meaning. Mark-up is meta-data about how data is to be displayed as charectors, it is meta to the data, it's meaning is beyond that of the data itself, outside it, or, we might say, beside the point to the data. In the term meta-knowledge this concept meets an implication of a definite hierarchy of need or importance, as by metaphor with altitude being in preferance, or the chain of being; meta-knowledge is higher than knowledge, it is beyond in importance or use of the knowledge because it gives all the knowledge more usefulnesss. While the chain of being and hierarchy are archaic concepts, when it comes to a knowledge economy, meta knowledge allows one to quickly and reliably sort through the information sphere for knowledge. It is thus superior in usefulness to well recorded general knowledge, which it allows one easily to locate.

As in: HTML, XML, et cetera. It is another word for markup languages from printing to complex program scripted web markup. Library Science was first to structure the study of metadata, and it's structure, but it was printers who first used it, and who brought it well into the field of modern machine languages as well as keeping at the forefront of the use of it as well. Library Science technicians developed SGML to markup book data, and from it has come HTML, XML, and CSS, core technologies of the early 21st Century metaprograming scripted Web. Though often credited as the first markup languge, SGML was little different from printer machine markup of the time (circa 60's). Meta-data may well more appropriately be called Neo-markup. Metadata may well allow us to soon destroy the semantic meaning gap between all languages of any kind, then all earthlings, and the built and global environment, will start being more linked in one field communicating data, information, knowledge, understanding, peace, and love.

Meta-knowledge is where it's at! Knowledge about knowledge, and, knowledge about knowing. Especially, for me, knowledge about the knowledge of knowledge, and it's use, generation, or sharing, especially in horizontally structured, easy, and fun, collaboration towards general consensus. Which is where the real economic and social power now lies, available to more of us than the day before, every day, for the forseeable future. For many generations of data age generational immigrants, access to meta-knowledge and access to power and sustainable sustanance will be becoming more and more synonymous. With metaprogramming it is relatively very easy to automate collaborative productivity of Meta-knowledge. Wikipedia, mySpace, and Google are some famous primitive examples of metaknowledge collaboration process automation.
